Publons Platform has published its 2017 Peer Review Awards. In this classification the Universidade de Lisboa was ranked 7th overall in the world. It should be noted that at the level of the "Chemistry", "Energy" and "Physics and Astronomy" categories, the Universidade de Lisboa ranked first in the world. For their contribution to this performance, C2TN members Nuno Barradas, Nuno Canha, António Pereira Gonçalves, Ján Mihalik, João Paulo Leal, Catarina Galinha and Maria Helena Casimiro were awarded the distinction of "Top Reviewers for the University of Lisbon". It would be good that more colleagues, who certainly review articles, would participate in the future in this platform to enhance the prestige our University and the function of reviewer that is of major importance for the quality of Science.

Project ROBOSAMPLER – Development of a ground robotic system for radiological and heavy metals monitoring in estuarine environments.
It has the ability to collect mudflat samples for further radiological analysis. Its technology and configuration allow interventions in estuarine environments, giving it large versatility in the tasks and missions spectrum. See video.
Sponsorship: The Portuguese technological company Introsys, SA - Integrators for Robotic Systems (INTROSYS), in partnership with the Instituto de Desenvolvimento de Novas Tecnologias (UNINOVA) e o Instituto Tecnológico e Nuclear (IST/ITN). This project is patented.

The PhD Work of Catarina Galinha was subject of a television play in the program "Retratos de Saúde".
“Selenium is an essential micronutrient for human health, but its deficiency may affect at least one billion people worldwide. Plants and plant-derived products transfer the soil-uptaken Se to humans through the food chain, which is hardly enough when soils have been always poor or already exhausted in bioavailable Se species. Other than agronomic methods for enhancing Se levels in cereals, such as soil and foliar supplements, seed enrichment may be viewed as an alternative Se-biofortification technique.”
Pedro Vaz, Researcher of C2TN, was recently appointed as the new National Liaison Officer (NLO) with the International Atomic Energy Agency. We believe that he will carry out this mission with commitment and contribute to the prestige of Portugal with the IAEA (FCT).
He became also a member of the Editorial Board of the "European Journal of Radiology" (ELSEVIER), since April 2017.
The IAEA has published online at Neutron/IBA Case Studies a set of 20 case studies about the use of neutrons and accelerators to solve problems of societal relevance. Three of these studies were based on the work of C2TN researchers. 1) Rescuing ancient glazed tiles using neutron tomography (Isabel Prudêncio et al.); 2) The air that we breathe (Marta Almeida et al.); 3) Alloying Kinetics in Contact Metallization for CMOS (Nuno Barradas et al.) These report recognize and reward the merit of C2TN Researchers Nuno Barradas, Marta Almeida and Isabel Prudêncio.
Official Cover of the Book "Food_Irradiation Technologies", currently in print, with the seal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, which prestige us. One of the authors is Sandra Cabo Verde, researcher of C2TN, and the theme of the book focuses on ionizing radiation technologies, one of the areas of unique competence in the national scientific system, installed in this Campus. Congratulations to Sandra!
Two articles from Catarina Galinha were published on portuguese monthly health magazines. "O Poder do Selénio", on PREVENIR, Nº 137 and "Solo Mais São", on SABER VIVER, Nº 201 (both articles only available in portuguese).

João Carlos Bentes Waerenborgh, researcher of C2TN of Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, was elected member representative of Portugal in the International Board on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect (IBAME), by the active Mössbauer spectroscopists in Portugal. As defined in its constitution the objectives of IBAME are to advance the diffusion of knowledge in the field of the Mössbauer Effect and its applications, to promote the activities of the international community in this interdisciplinary field of basic and applied research, to attempt the harmonization of venues and dates of the various international and continental Mössbauer conferences in order to avoid duplications, and to encourage the participation of young research workers and research workers of weak resource countries. Furthermore IBAME elaborates recommendations for the nomenclature to be used in publications on results achieved by using Mössbauer spectroscopy.
